Modern, in a philosophical context, does not mean late twentieth century, but modern as opposed to ancient -- the European schools of thought that developed during the Renaissance and flourished through the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today we live in what is termed the "post-modern era"; and most post-modern philosophers are very happy with the notion that we each create our own experience of reality.
